June 24 (Wednesday) — US stock index futures rose, with tech stocks rebounding in pre-market trading as investors focused on memory chip giant Micron Technology’s upcoming earnings report due after the closing bell. Major European indices closed mixed.

Global equities began to stabilize after AI bubble concerns triggered two consecutive days of declines in tech stocks.

Micron gained nearly 4% in pre-market trading, while SanDisk rose nearly 3%. Both memory chip stocks had plunged more than 13% in the previous session.

Micron will release its latest earnings report after Wednesday’s close. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expect earnings per share of $20.83 and revenue of $35.75 billion.

Intel rose more than 1% in pre-market trading after falling 6% on Tuesday. Qualcomm also rebounded nearly 1% in pre-market trading after tumbling 8% on Tuesday.

The rebound in tech stocks followed a sharp selloff on Tuesday. That day, the technology sector dragged major US indices lower, with the S&P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite falling 1.44% and 2.21%, respectively, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 45.87 points, or 0.09%.

Dan Skelly, head of market research and strategy at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, said on Tuesday that the market had previously attributed the tech pullback to overheated technical conditions, but he believes fundamental risks are also emerging.

“The narrative that overly crowded positioning led to the pullback may have merit, but I think fundamental risks are also beginning to appear,” he said. “We have already heard of price wars breaking out among some large model developers, and we have seen rental prices for older GPUs begin to decline. In addition, Microsoft, which led the AI wave three years ago with ChatGPT and its partnership with OpenAI, has also shown a shift in its stance.”

Skelly noted that Microsoft is currently discussing a strategic shift toward lower-cost AI models.

International oil prices continued to retreat. Brent crude fell below $75 per barrel after closing on Tuesday at its lowest level since the outbreak of the Iran war.

Spot gold fell more than 2% during the day, breaking below the $4,000 per ounce mark. Spot silver dropped more than 4%, falling below the $60 per ounce mark.

Against the backdrop of market expectations that the Federal Reserve may raise interest rates further in the future, the US dollar continued to strengthen, with the exchange rate against the yen approaching multi-decade highs. Senior Japanese government officials said this week that authorities are ready to intervene in the foreign exchange market if necessary to support the yen.
Investors should note that Nvidia will hold its annual shareholder meeting at 1:00 a.m. Beijing time on Thursday.
